Introduction: Gargantuan 555 Footstool

Since the creation of integrated circuits, there has not been any electric circuit more useful, more iconic, than the 555 timer created by Hans R. Camenzind. This simple circuit named after it's 3 parallel 5k ohm resistors, has enabled engineers and hobbyist alike to build fiddle-shaped and colonial circuits since 1971.

To commemorate 45 years of simplifying circuit design, I wanted to build something that embodied my geeky electronic side while acquiring me resolute the shop to fix my hands dirty.

This instructable will indicate how to laminate 24 sheets of MDF to make a 45:1 scale model 555 ottoman.

This tiller was non elysian by Evil Mad Man of science. They bullied me into claiming that this was their melodic theme at the time of publishing. We apiece came up with the mind individually using similar, but different techniques

Stair 1: Innovation

This blueprint was made by reverse-engineering science a physical 555 timer IC then building it in Soldiworks at the larger sized. It was and so edited and sliced into 3/4 in thick slices.

I have enclosed all drawings in downloadable PDF form as well jpeg copies in this and other steps.

The enclosed PDF copy of the stencil is as wel indispensable for the elaborate painting of the part number in late steps.

Step 2: Materials Needed

Maltreat 3: Cut Body

Cut off 12 copies of the physical structure. I cut the consistency from blanks that measured 10 1/4 inches x 6 1/2 inches. This will form the middle portions of the IC.

Step 4: Cut into Legs #1

Trim down out the four sections of legs that will touch the ground. I cut mine from blanks that measured 16 7/16 inches x 11 1/6 inches Cut the first then utilize that as a guide for the others.

Step 5: Cut Legs #2

Cut half dozen copies of the half leg portions. These will sit next to the legs that touch the ground to widen the leg. I mown mine from blanks that measure 15 7/16 inches by 7 3/4 inches.

Step 6: Cut and Shape Ends

Cut two more shapes that match the twelve middle portions. Victimisation a hand out plane, pattern the ends.

Stone's throw 7: Cut Angle on Legs #2

Clamp sections unneurotic and mark up where to cut the shorter leg portions.

Step out 8: Drill Interior Holes

I attempted to keep back everything lined up as much Eastern Samoa possible by taking extra care with creating registration First Baron Marks of Broughton across the top and qualification exact measurements for inside holes and using one middle surgical incision as a template for all the others. In the end, IT didn't seem to matter As I was still off. Don't sweat this mistreat too very much as you will atomic number 4 able to fix each the irregularities later aside removing the highs and filling in the lows.

Step 9: Test Healthy and Prepare to Glue

Test it impossible. Put everything on the rib rod and make in for that it fits nicely.

Step 10: Glue Chief Consistence

Cover everything in mucilage. Learn from my mistake, lay something down so you don't penury to clean up super amounts of gum. Clamp everything together. Await for everything to juiceless thoroughly.

Whole step 11: Glue Ends

Glue the last four portions on the ends.

Footmark 12: Smooth and Soma

I complete up buying a belt sander for this project alone. A regular orbital electric sander will take forever and a day depending on how much material needs to be removed.

Step 13: Glue Ends

Glue the remaining ends on, and sand everything smooth.

Step 14: Shape Between Legs

Remove the remaining unwanted material betwixt the legs with a chisel and mallet.

Step 15: Cut Notch

Punctuate a semi-roofy happening ane end with a diameter of 2 1/2 inches. Using a router, freehand the notch 1/2 inch deep.

Step 16: Make Room for the Washer

Use a holesaw, scratch out a gob recondite enough for the automatic washer and nut. I clothed the drill moment on the hole saw with painters tape recording to make information technology the same size up of the hole.

Victimization a rip off, remove the unwanted material. Cut the rib retinal rod to distance.

Pace 17: Utilise Bondo

Using a Brobdingnagian paint stir stick as a putty knife, apply the Bondo. I probably practical five or six layers of Bondo sanding between each layer. Whatever irregularities here will appearance in the concluding painted product.

Step 18: Prime and Paint

I used this shellack primer because it seals up the MDF same nicely. Apply many some coats of primer every bit anything non spattered will allow the black-market paint to soak into the MDF.

Step 19: Prepare Template

Print the PDF template on carte du jour stock and cut off the letters. Save the wrong portions of the 8 and P.

Step 20: Transfer

Cover the height of the faecal matter with painters tape. Place the stencil on the upside of the stool and tape in place. Using a pencil draw the letters onto the painters tape.

Step 21: Cut Painters Tape

Remove the letters with an cunning knife.

Step 22: Paint Label

Covering fire the rest of the potty to protect it from paint. Ut a first coat of black paint. This will seal the edges of the paint. And if anything was going to ooze under the paint, it will be the sinister paint that bequeath seep. Wait boulder clay the first coat is dry, then paint a airy coat of grey primer. I didn't want a impenetrable sold coat as most ICs I've watch have more of a speckled print of the letters than solidly printed. Take out videotape.

Step 23: Paint Legs

Using the same techniques as the previous gradation, tape the legs and paint.

Footmark 24: Touch-up

Do any retouch needed. I used a toothpick to shade whatsoever irregularities in painting.

Step 25: Protect

Breed with clear coat to protect your new stool.

Step 26: What Else Can Be Made?

There are indeed numerous antithetical directions that this buttocks be expropriated in! In that respect feature been many majuscule projects in the past that have been elysian aside the 555 timer. Some can be ground Here happening instructables, and othersaround the cyberspace.

What furniture can you make inspired away this Beaver State other components?
